SPELMAN COLLEGE Spelman College seeks teacher/scholars dedicated to excellence in teaching and to the continued enhancement of the scholarly environment for students and colleagues. Founded in 1881, Spelman College is a private four-year liberal arts college located in Atlanta, GA. The oldest historically Black college for women in the United States, Spelman is a member of the Atlanta University Center Consortium and Atlanta Regional Consortium for Higher Education. All tenure-track candidates are expected to have a demonstrated interest in liberal arts and sciences education, be able to contribute effectively to undergraduate teaching, aid in curriculum development, provide service to the department and College, as well as be active in scholarly, creative, and/or research productivity appropriate to a liberal arts environment.
Tenure-Track Positions
Assistant/Associate Professor of Biology Responsibilities include: Teach an advanced course in mammalian/human physiology and contribute to an introductory Organismal Form and Function course; teach other courses in the Biology curriculum and provide mentoring for student research. The candidate will also be able to establish an active research program that will involve undergraduates in mentored research.
Assistant/Associate Professor of Biology Responsibilities include: Teach in the broad areas of Evolutionary Biology or Ecology; provide Spelman students with field experiences, both through formal course work and mentored research. The candidate will contribute to an introductory population/evolution course and develop advanced elective courses. The candidate will also be able to establish an active research program that will involve undergraduates in mentored research.
With one of the largest majors at Spelman, the Biology Department is nationally recognized for its role in preparing women of color for graduate and professional studies in the sciences. The successful candidates will assist in developing and teaching introductory and advanced elective courses in their area of specialization, participate in student advising, and establish a productive research program. Competitive start-up packages are available for new faculty. Qualifications: Ph.D., or equivalent in the biological sciences, post doctoral research experience, and strong interest in undergraduate teaching, mentoring, and research. Assistant Professor of Drama and Dance Responsibilities include: Teach undergraduate courses in acting, including Beginning Acting, Styles of Acting, Audition Techniques, and other related courses. Direct one main stage production each year and coach student-actors. Qualifications: MFA or Ph.D. required. Professional acting and directing experience along with teaching experience at the college level required. Review of applications begins immediately and will continue until position is filled.
Assistant Professor of Economics Responsibilities include: Teach courses in principles, intermediate economics theory; and quantitative methods; direct undergraduate research. Highly dedicated teacher-scholar, committed to economics instruction and research within a liberal arts academic tradition with a focus on interdisciplinarity and globalization. Qualifications: Ph.D. in Economics; with secondary interest in either urban economics, public finance or industrial organization. Review of applications will begin immediately. Assistant Professor of Psychology Responsibilities include: Teach courses in Statistics, Cognitive Psychology, and Theories of Learning. Demonstrated research productivity with the potential to secure grant funding and mentor undergraduates in research is highly desirable. Qualifications: The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology or related field. Non-Tenure Track Positions
Lecturer of Art Responsibilities include: Teach beginning and advanced levels of drawing, including Life Drawing, to majors and non-majors. The Department seeks an accomplished artist specializing in drawing with an emphasis on the human figure. Familiarity with a variety of teaching methods, including a basic understanding of digital technologies and the ability to apply them to an undergraduate liberal arts curriculum with concentrations in Studio Art and Art History is desirable. Teaching load will consist of three studio courses per semester with an opportunity to develop advanced courses in an area of expertise. This position is a full-time, three-year, one-time renewable appointment beginning the 2010-2011 academic year. Qualifications: MFA or equivalent terminal degree, a minimum of three years teaching experience, and a competitive exhibition record. Lecturer of Physics Responsibilities include: Teach introductory lectures, recitation and labs. The Physics department is committed to reforming its courses with research-based and innovative pedagogy, including alternative formats for lecture and laboratory sessions. This position is a full time appointment for the spring 2010 semester only. Qualifications: Ph.D. in Physics, (ABD is acceptable if defending this year) and teaching experience is desired.
